I just got a SideKick II from T-Mobile and needed to import my contacts from Address Book on Mac into my SideKick. T-Mobile has a web-based tool to sync info with the SideKick, and it can import contacts from various mail programs and formats, but it does not support vCards, which Mac AddressBook can export.
So, after much time searching in google looking for a tool that converted vCards to Comma / Tab separated file, I finally figured out a (not so direct) solution. I thought I would post it here in case any one else needed to do this.
Requires:
- export AddressBook as vcards 1.0 AppleScript Script
- Microsoft Entourage
- T-Mobile SideKick online Account
Steps:
- Download this AppleScript script which will export each AddressBook to an individual vCard. You will have to edit the script to specify the directory that the vCards will export to.
- Switch to the Directory where the vCards were exported, and selected all of the vCards. Right (ctrl) click and select open with from the menu. Open the menu in Microsoft Entourage.
- Swtich to Entourage and save each contact into your address book.
- Switch to the Address in Entourage and select the contact you want to export. Select File > Export. This will export to a text file.
- Log into your t-mobile sidekick control panel, and open the address book.
- From the menu on the left, select import.
- In the "Import Data From" field, select : Microsoft Entourage for Mac (.txt file)
- In section 2, select the file you exported from Entourage.
- Fill out the rest of the settings, and then click import
You contacts should now be imported into the SideKick desktop, and after a couple of minutes should be sync with your SideKick.
Note, I did this on Mac OS X 10.3.5 with Microsoft Entourage 2003.
Post any questions, corrections or suggestions in the comments.
Thanks for posting this! But I am having a problem... I created a folder on the desktop called "vcards" where I want all the vcards to go... But I do not know how to edit the script to reflect this... What is the path to the desptop, for example?
Thank you!

you can actually just email the vCards from your desktop to your tmail. when it hits the sidekick, it'll prompt you to add to the address book when you check the email. it only works on single contact vCards and won't work if you export more than one contact as a single vCard. anyhow, it's far easier and faster than the method described above even if you need to send dozens of emails.

Thanks for this script. I have been pounding my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get 800 contacts copied over to Outlook. Took me about 3 minutes with this script doing the work. Bravo!

Hi Mike
I couldn't see how to email you from the blog.
I'm considering the Sidekick and am a Mac user too, so
I have a few questions for you.
Please email me,
Thanks

OK - i have scoured the internet for info on how I would be able to sync my contacts from either my apple address book or entourage with the new sidekick 2.
I have about 1,000 contacts that I would like to transfer.
before I go to buy the sidekick 2 - i just want to make sure that this will be possible.
any help would be great!
thank you

HI-
Just got a sidekick. I want to upload my outlook contacts, but I am not a Mac User. Will this still work? Looking to do it for free rather than pay $10.
Thank You!

I had a similar problem. I needed to import my addresses from Apple's Address Book into Entourage. Believe it or not, you can select all the entries in Address Book and simply drag them into the contacts area in Entourage and presto! It works like a charm. Usually the drag and drop works in most circumstances when you can't figure out how to import or export something. Hope this helps someone. When I researched this on the web I saw scripts that people wrote and even some programs that you can buy that do the exact same thing.

Hi,
if you have Microsoft Entourage on your Mac, importing you Address Book contacts into the Sidekick II is very easy and doesn't need any Apple Script or third party tool. Just do the following:
- In Address Book select all your contacts.
- Now drag & drop them into Entourage's address book view.
- Now Export from Entourage into a tab separated txt file.
- Use this txt file in the T-Mobile Sidekick web site for importing.
Done.
Eeeeasy. ;-)
Cheers,
Stefan.

On his ninth birthday a boy receives many presents. Two of them first seem to be less important: an old cupboard from his brother and a little Indian figure made of plastic from his best friend. But these two presents turn out to be much more magic than the rest...
